The abc Conjecture Proof That Split the Mathematical World

Mathematics seems like a science without passion. Formulas are strict, proofs are impartial. But not the story of the abc conjecture.

What the abc Conjecture Actually Claims

The abc conjecture describes a surprising connection between addition and multiplication of integers. If a + b = c, then the product of all distinct prime factors of these numbers is usually much greater than c itself. It sounds simple, but a whole range of great theorems follow from it — including a shortcut to Fermat’s Last Theorem.

Mochizuki’s 500-Page Proof Nobody Could Read

In 2012, Japanese mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki announced that he had proved the abc conjecture. But the proof was not just long — 500 pages — it was built on his own framework called IUT (Inter-Universal Teichmüller Theory), which almost no one understood. Only his closest students in Kyoto claimed that everything checked out.

The abc Conjecture Controversy Erupts

In 2018, two heavyweights of world mathematics — Peter Scholze and Jakob Stix — traveled to Tokyo, worked through the proof, and declared: there is a fatal error, particularly in the key Corollary 3.12. Mochizuki’s team responded that this was simply a “misunderstanding of the essence.” The conflict ignited in full.

In 2021, despite the ongoing disagreements, Mochizuki’s paper was published in a journal of which he himself is the editor-in-chief.

A Third Voice Enters the abc Conjecture Debate

It seemed like the end of the story. But in 2024, Kirti Joshi stepped onto the stage, claiming that both sides are wrong. He proposed a supplement to the proof that fills the gaps. In his view, the abc conjecture is proved — provided his refinements are accepted. Mochizuki called this “deeply flawed.”

Who Is Right?

The broader mathematical community largely sides with Scholze: there is an error. But Kyoto holds its ground. Joshi stands between them, offering a “bridge” — though it seems no one wants to cross it.

Formal verification may offer a way out: tools like Coq, Lean, and AI-assisted proof checkers can break down any argument step by step, without emotion. But formalizing IUT is nearly as difficult as inventing it.

Why the abc Conjecture Story Matters

Even in the world of strict logic, mathematics remains human. Where there are geniuses, there will be ambition and dispute. And perhaps that is precisely what keeps it alive.
