How OpenAI Solved Navier-Stokes in 4 Days — and What Happened to the Other Millennium Problems

OpenAI recently published a solution to one of the Millennium Prize Problems — the Navier-Stokes equations. The solution was reportedly found in just four days using the company’s internal model. But the truly interesting part isn’t the result itself.

The Navier-Stokes AI Solution That Took Four Days and $15 Million

On September 1st, OpenAI launched an effort to find solutions to all of the Millennium Prize Problems — not just Navier-Stokes, or at least several of them. The Navier-Stokes problem alone consumed an estimated average of $15 million in compute.

Where Did the Remaining $75 Million Go?

That raises a straightforward question: if the Navier-Stokes AI solution cost roughly $15 million in compute, what happened to the other $75 million allocated for the remaining five problems? The math is simple — and the silence around it is conspicuous.
