Vital Math Turns 6: The Story of a Math YouTube Channel Driven by Beauty, Not Views

Six years. This time, there’s no anniversary video and no big retrospective. It might look like the uploads have stopped and the channel is winding down — but is that really the case?

YouTube and the Uncertain Future of Educational Channels

YouTube is a fascinating and still surprisingly young medium. Yes, it’s been around for nearly 20 years — but the most significant channels are 10 to 15 years old at most. And only now are we beginning to see what the “future” of a channel can actually look like. It turns out to be quite varied.

Some creators — though a small minority — keep generating content at a steady pace. Others slow down, releasing episodes rarely but with precision. Some pivot to Shorts. And some simply close their channels entirely. The most famous science communicator Veritasium recently sold his channel to a private equity firm, opening a new path for creators: episodes are now produced by a full editorial team of 30+ people with budgets of tens of thousands of dollars per video. Interestingly, since the sale, there have been noticeably more math-focused topics.

Six Years of the Vital Math YouTube Channel: What the Numbers Say

So where does Vital Math stand? Over six years, the journey has been real: 80+ episodes, 106,000 subscribers, nearly 15 million views, and almost one million hours watched. Yet the channel has remained a hobby — not an industrial science content machine. Ongoing constraints and constant uncertainty don’t help with either views or planning.

Yes, only two videos went out on the main channel in the past year. But activity on the Telegram channel has grown, and a second YouTube channel launched very recently (details coming soon). Vital Math is also starting to go global — you can fill out the form here if you haven’t yet.

The Philosophy Behind This Math YouTube Channel: Beauty Over Views

Here’s where things get interesting. Almost every episode has been driven by what was genuinely fascinating to the creator — not by chasing views. On top of that, a strong internal standard for technical quality and production level has acted as its own constraint. The result is a curious paradox: many of the most naturally viral math topics — What does pi really hide? The Riemann Hypothesis. What did Perelman actually do? The nature of infinity — have yet to be touched at all.

And honestly, mathematics has no shortage of beautiful and compelling ideas. Given enough time, energy, and the right team, there is so much that could be made.

What Comes Next for the Math YouTube Channel

On one hand, there’s a desire to create something large and genuinely useful — something that brings the beauty of mathematics to a whole new level. And as experience shows, that kind of impact can sometimes be achieved through means beyond a YouTube or Telegram channel alone.

On the other hand, Vital Math isn’t going anywhere. Over the next 12 months, there will definitely be new, interesting, and unexpected things. The only real requirement is having the energy to make them. And as long as that energy is there, so will be the beauty and the mathematics — at least from Vital Math.

What Topic Should the Next Video Cover?

Since popular math topics came up — leave a comment: what would you most like to see an episode about? The topic from the most-liked comment will become a full episode.

Think deeply, and enjoy the beauty of mathematics.
