The Swimmer and the Hat: A Classic River Current Puzzle
A Daily Math Challenge Worth Your Weekend
Today’s puzzle is a classic — but it still makes you stop and think. Exactly what you need for a relaxed weekend.
The Swimmer Hat River Puzzle: Setting the Scene
Imagine you are standing on a bridge, watching an athlete jump into a river and begin swimming upstream. At that very moment, a gust of wind knocks a hat off a passerby’s head, and it starts drifting downstream.
Ten minutes later, the swimmer turns around and heads back toward the bridge — then receives a new objective: catch the hat. He keeps swimming at the same speed and catches up with it right under a second bridge, located 1,000 meters from the first.
Question: What is the speed of the river current?
Solving the River Current Puzzle Step by Step
Here is the key insight: since the current carries both the swimmer and the hat at the same speed, it has no effect on the distance between them. The only thing that matters is the time the swimmer spends moving away from the hat and then returning to it.
He swam away from the hat for 10 minutes — so it takes him exactly 10 minutes to catch back up to it.
That means the hat was carried by the current for a total of 20 minutes, covering 1,000 meters.
The Answer to the Swimmer Hat River Puzzle
The speed of the river current is 50 meters per minute (1,000 ÷ 20).
The elegance of this puzzle lies in what you don’t need to know — the swimmer’s speed is completely irrelevant to the solution.
Think It Through: Your Daily Math Challenge
Now consider this: what if the swimmer were faster or slower? Would the answer change?
